Visitors to Lincoln High Street were met with heated scenes and aggressive clashes this afternoon involving a group of religious preachers.

As reported previously, passers-by hit out against the public speakers, who held religious placards condemning ‘sinners’.

Rows escalated at the High Street war memorial, with one group staging a counter-demonstration against the messages of the preachers.

They held banners reading “Love is love” and “Gay is OK” in front of speakers’ placards including one which read “Hate crime: To let sinners go to hell with no warning.”

Eye witnesses described scenes of “hatred” when speaking to The Lincolnite.

Blair Greenwood said: “I’m married to another man and it’s because of people like that that I can’t walk down the street without worrying I’ll be attacked. This is 2016, it isn’t the dark ages.”

Angered at the messages, shoppers and university students were seen to attempt to knock the speakers from their platforms with a beach ball.

Although Lincolnshire Police attended, a spokesperson said: “Whilst we understand offence was caused, we did not find evidence to suggest that the speaker was breaking the law.”
